Research Interests

Sampling and sampling preparation is a vital component of the research. Application is in the biotechnology, pharmacology, biochemistry and the environment areas. Methods applied include the micro pressure driven techniques, electrodriven capillary based separations, electrochemical detection and mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure ionisation. Special emphasis is on carbohydrate type of analytes, although recently metal ions and anions in wastewater and biological samples have been analysed.

Recent research projects have included studies to increase extraction efficiency of microdialysis sampling especially for metal ions in biological and environmental samples, and the development of ionisation strategies for the unequivocal characterisation of saccharides with mass spectrometry.

Research Interests

Development of electrochemical microsensors and biosensors for potentiometric, amperometric and voltammetric detection of substances in batch and flow injection analyses (FIA) as well as in chromatography (HPLC & IC). Applications include: surface water, wastewater, soils, biological, samples. Metal speciation in various environmental samples. Other interests include, characterization of materials using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic techniques.

Research Interest

Most of our research is concentrated on the application of atmospheric pressure ionisation-mass spectrometer (API-MS) to a number of analytical chemistry problems. Our interest extends to the application of supported liquid membrane ( SLM) and solid phase extraction (SPE) as sample clean-up and/or preconcentration techniques to a number of compounds of interest in variety of matrices. The projects currently in progress or completed include;

i) Method development of environmental samples, e.g. pesticides

ii) Method development of veterinary drug in biological matrices, e.g. anabolic drugs, antibiotics, etc.

iii) Application of API-MS and/or LC-API-MS

  • Interest in proteomics
